The mayor of Chippenham Town Council, appointed in May, faces criticism because he once smuggled cocaine into Britain. Some see him as unfit to serve as mayor because of the drugs offences in the eighties. He was sent to prison for two years in 1987. Another councillor is refusing to work with him and Conservative district councillor Alison Bucknell says he is not fit to serve as mayor. (The Mail on Sunday, p46)
