A senior Labour member of West Lothian DC resigned yesterday after a row over a £17,000 travel expense claim in connection with travel between his home in South Shields in Tyneside, and Bathgate where the council's headquarters are, reports The Scotsman (p8).

The councillor had previously indicated that in view of family difficulties, he was moving to South Shields, but would be continuing his council duties by staying in Livingston with his daughter for four days a week.
