A Gateshead primary school criticised by education inspectors has had the threat of management by a government-appointed education association lifted, The Journal reports (p14).

The department of education yesterday gave conditional acceptance to an action plan for The Drive school subject to the appointment of two independent governors to replace local councillors.

Gateshead education chair Ian Mearns, who will lose his governors' post, said: 'I am obviously disappointed that the secretary of state does not see a place for experienced local councillors or officers of the authority on the governing body.'
