A fifth terminal at Heathrow Airport may increase the profits of airlines and the British Airports Authorities, but it would not serve the interests of London or the UK, a group of 11 councils has claimed, the FT reports (p9).

The authorities, who have made a submission to the forth coming inquiry into the plans, say BAA had a history of underplaying the environmental impact of projects.

Surrey CC planning officer Jim Bailey said: 'The sheer scale of terminal five, three times bigger than the present terminal four, would overwhelm the surrounding area, which is already one of the most developed and congested in the country', the paper reports.
