Local government faces a billion pound spending cut next year, the Observer reported (P12).

The local government finance consultant Rita Hale will today warn of the cuts, particularly in education, at a conference organised by the Association of County Councils.

Hale says that analysis of data released three months ago by the departments of the environment and for education reveals that ministers are planning a more ferocious squeeze on local spending than they have acknowledged.
