The Association of County Councils chairman, Dennis Pettitt, today expressed great concern at Environment Secretary John Gummer's decision to require the Local Government Commission to conduct further reviews in Derbyshire and Durham.

Mr Pettitt said: 'Once again the government is undermining the commission's independence and its local consultation process. The communities in these counties, not to mention the many hard-working local government employees in these areas, are now set for a further lengthy period of confusion and uncertainty. I am sure the commission will stick to its determination to recommend strong and robust structures in these areas.'
