Plans by parents to build their own grant-maintained secondary school in Gwent are examined in The Western Mail (p10).

Only a handful of schools in Wales have opted out of local education authority control, the paper reports, and no one in Britain has tried to start a grant-maintained school from scratch.

The parents will lodge their plans for the 800 pupil £6.5m Usk High School to the House of Commons on June 28.

Gwent CC opposes the plans, claiming the school is unnecessary, the paper reports.

Local government reorganisation complicates the situation as next year Usk will no longer be in Gwent but in the new unitary council area of Monmouthshire.
