Berkshire CC could be forced to increase the supply of development land for housing if the department of the environment uses its threatened powers, reports the Financial Times (p8).

The DoE says the council should stick to its recommendation of providing land for 40,000 homes between 1991 and 2006. Berkshire's plan provides for 37,000.

The paper reports that the council says it would have to break into green belt land if it were to accept the DoE's figure.
