Coventry City Council's chief executive has been appointed as a member of the advisory group to the government's Welfare to Work Taskforce for getting young unemployed people into work.

Iain Roxburgh said: 'I am pleased to have been appointed to the advisory group. I believe it is a strong recognition that this city has shown that it can tackle difficult issues successfully through partnership working. There is strong commitment from the private sector employers, the voluntary sector and all the statutory agencies to helping the unemployed, particularly the young, into work.'

The `New Deal' for 18-24 year olds will be operating nationally from April 1998, and in Coventry and Warwickshire a partnership steering group, led by the employment service and comprising of the city and county councils, the chamber and other key organisations is well into planning its implementation.
