Coventry City Council social services has been criticised in a government report for failing to protect children at risk, reports The Guardian (p7).
The council called in the Social Services Inspectorate after six non-accidental deaths of children over a 10-month period.
Inspectors concluded that services for children at risk were 'unsafe', some staff lacked sufficient experience and heavy workloads had created a 'siege mentality' in the department.
The Guardian reports that Coventry has accepted the criticisms and says it has taken remedial action, but challenges the broader conclusions of the review.
Meanwhile, the SSI report coincides with the publication of a national report by the Audit Commission and the Social Services Inspectorate which claims people in Coventry are not properly served by social services.
