John McGuigan of Coventry City Council told BBC Radio Four's Today programme

this morning that the national stadium should be built at Coventry because

the site was a strategic one.

The former gasworks site 'meets all the government criteria for

regeneration', he said.

It also has the advantage of being close to motorways, in the centre of the

country, Mr McGuigan said.

'We're trying to bring the nation's stadium back to the heart of the

nation', he told Today.

'It's a stadium everyone can get to, we can afford it - it's half the price

of Wembley - and we've got planning permission, which nobody else has'.
