Commenting on the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) results* in London, Association of London Government deputy chair Sally Powell said:

'The London results show that the capital's councils cover the full spectrum from 'excellent' to 'poor'.

'London is the largest city in the UK and a major world capital. It has areas of extreme wealth and poverty and has a very mobile and diverse population - factors that help put the results into context.

'All local authorities have strengths and weaknesses. 'Excellent' authorities have areas that need improving and authorities falling into the 'poor' and 'weak' categories have some first class services. Councils will be using the CPA results to ensure that their services continue to develop and improve. One way this can be done is by authorities teaming up and learning from each other.

'The CPA process is new. We welcome the introduction of a system to evaluate and improve local authority services. We will be discussing the results and the process with the London boroughs and Audit Commission and looking for ways to develop the CPA system in the future'.
