The Council for the Protection of Rural England has called on the government to strengthen the links between regional development agencies.

The CPRE believes this would help growth around the country, helping to stem the flow of people moving to the south-east.

Assistant director Tony Burton said: 'The missing link with the RDAs is there is no link throughout the country - we need a mechanism that looks at the RDA strategies as a piece.'

The call comes in a report on housing in the south-east, which recommends the government reject plans for 1.1 million new houses.
