The Financial Times (p9) reports on a warning from a Conservative dominated committee of MPs that roads and bridges are rapidly deteriorating because of government cuts in the maintenance budget.

According to the report by the Commons transport committee, about 10 per cent of the main road networks would reach a critical condition within a year and some bridges may have to be closed to lorries because of delays to strengthening work.

The committee urges both central and local government to attach greater importance to road maintenance.
