Croydon LBC leader Val Shawcross, speaking at the launch of Labour's 1998 local election campaign said:

'In Croydon we are proud of our record. We have improved education and have not been afraid to be tough on failing schools when necessary. We have worked with the police to bring crime down by 24 per cent in some areas. We have done all this and kept the council tax below the national average.

'For the last 12 months we have worked in partnership with a new Labour government. That partnership is now threatened by the Tories who want to turn the clock back.

'In Croydon the Tories are calling for an irresponsible, uncosted,£50 cut in the council tax. As always with the Tories they refuse to say where the money is coming from. And it can only come from one source - slashing Croydon's budget by£6m, almost exactly the amount of additional money the council has received for education from the new Labour government.

'Nothing could make clearer the Tories' desire to pretend the general election result did not happen. In Croydon we are going to fight the Tories every step of the way. But the Tories' priorities for Croydon are a warning to every voter: do not sleepwalk into disaster on 7 May.'
