Cumbria CC has called on environment secretary John Gummer to reopen the public inquiry into Nirex, the state owned nuclear waste company's plans for an underground dumping ground.

The Independent (p6) reports that a leaked internal memo to senior Nirex staff indicates that much more information is needed to get an accurate picture of the rock that would surround the radioactive waste.

Cumbria CC believes that the memo reinforces objections made to the dump at the inquiry.

'Once again, something has come to light that flies in the face of the contention that everything is going well at the site,' council group leaders said.
