Cumbria CC leader Bill Minto has demanded more details from a consortium which is planning to build a 70 mile canal for ocean going ships across Northern England.

The Guardian (p9) reports that the Suez-type canal would stretch from the Solway Firth in Cumbria to the mouth of the Tyne and would speed the passage of freight ships from the Atlantic to the North Sea.

Mr Minto told the paper: 'We are urging members of this consortium to make themselves known and tell everyone what their intentions are.

'The idea that this could happen cannot just be dismissed. The country would have stood still for the last two centuries if everyone had ridiculed grand ideas.'
