An advertising gaffe in Cumbria by the Local Government Commission has led to claims it was going to include the status quo as a third option for the county. The commission said the claim was nonsense.

Advertisements in two local newspapers included an excerpt from a commission leaflet with boxes for residents to tick one of three options, even though the commission's draft report only had two, both for unitaries. Just before the report was published the Cumberland News claimed the status quo was going to be an option.

The commission said: 'The design studio was processing ads for the first 11 review areas and obviously had all these designs on computer. They must have pulled the wrong one down.'

But a spokesman for Barkers advertising agency said the firm had used a leaflet.
