The leaders and the chief executives of the seven local authorities in Cumbria have agreed to work more closely together.

In setting up the new Cumbrian Local Authorities Strategic Board, the councils agreed to promote Cumbrian interests regionally, nationally and internationally to ensure that the voice of Cumbria is heard far and wide. A commitment was also made to collaborate on providing services more efficiently and to share learning and best practice experience.

Eden DC joint leader Colin Nineham was elected chairman of the new board. He said:

'The formation of the Cumbrian Local Authorities Strategic Board heralds a new dawn of collaboration across the Cumbrian councils. It is gratifying to see so much goodwill amongst the different authorities and there is much scope for us all to work together to improve services for the public.'

The councils included in the new agreement are:

Allerdale BC

Barrow BC

Carlisle City Council

Copeland BC

Cumbria CC

Eden DC

South Lakeland DC
