Private wheel clamping firms are to be stopped from obtaining the names and addresses of drivers which are used to intimidate them into paying fines, reported The Sunday Telegraph (p12).

John Prescott is concerned that the cowboy firms are paying the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority for the information when they supply photographs of licence plates.

The firms write to motorists demanding fines, using an official-looking letter identical to police fixed penalty forms. They then threaten court action unless the money is paid. DETR officials confirmed Mr Prescott is conducting an 'urgent review' of the DVLA procedures in an attempt to stop the practice.
