The Times (Feb 15, p8) reported that plans for a futuristic curved bridge across the Tyne which would swivel upwards to allow ships to pass underneath, is leading to a clash with the owners of an eight acre site who want to build 300 homes there.

A Gateshead MBC spokesman told the paper that the authority would use a compulsory purchase order for the land earmarked for a£100m arts complex, which is planned to connect to the bridge, if necessary.

The homes developers claim their plans for the site have been under discussion for a long time and are threatening to take the matter to a public inquiry.
