The Western Mail (p3) reports controversy over the decision in Neath Port Talbot CBC to lose two chief officers and four assistant directors as part of a further phase of rebuilding after local government reorganisation. At a meeting yesterday the council was lobbied by Unison members but still gave approval to recommendations from its newly created performance review group to reposition the housing and social services departments under a single director and merge education and leisure services under a director education and lifelong learning.

The 26 assistant director posts will be replaced by 22 heads of services with clearer accountability for specific services. Unison branch secretary Barbara Trahar is quoted: 'Fears have been growing that the council's proposals are nothing more than a fig leaf for financial cuts and a reduction of services to the public.'
