A 13-yard cycle lane, which has been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records for being the world's shortest, is causing embarrassment for Bradford City Council, reports The Guardian (p3).

The authority's chair of transport, Latif Darr, said: 'It is absolutely ridiculous. It looks absurd. It is a joke and I can't believe we gave permission for it.'

The land was organised and paid for by a supermarket chain, whose new factory was approved subject to the council's checklist of green requirements.

The firm said these included provision for cyclists, and that the supermarket had followed the city's instructions over the relevent section of highway.
