Newcastle City Council is fighting pollution by urging employees to get on their bikes in return for a cash reward.

The council will offer staff who wish to use their cycles business loans of up to£400. Staff will also be paid an allowance of 14.9p a mile for business use.

Cycles will be fitted with devices for measuring mileage to ensure accurate claims. In order to qualify for the loan, applicants must use their bikes for business travel on at least eight occasions and for at least 30 miles a year.

The scheme will be piloted by staff in the highways and transportation department for six months and its effects will be monitored before it is extended.
