Darlington BC plans to improve prosecution procedures in a bid to get rid of 'slum' landlords, the Northern Echo reports (p7).

A major report on enforcing private letting standards will be discussed later this month. The council's plans follow the conviction of Hans Kukreja for running unfit bedsits. The case, which led to Mr Kukreja being fined £9,000, took two years to bring to trial.

A report published yesterday by the Campaign for Bedsit Rights (The Independent, p5) says that nearly one in ten private tenants are harassed by landlords every year. Only 200 landlords are prosecuted each year, says the report, and most receive fines of less than £500.
