Bedfordshire CC has instigated an internal inquiry after a 79-year-old man in its care starved to death at his home.

Lloyd Wilkinson had been receiving home support arranged for him by social services following his release from hospital in January. Care workers were meant to visit the pensioner three times a day, seven days a week to prepare meals and encourage him to eat.

A district nurse was also meant to be regularly visiting his Bedford home. He was found dead on 30 March. An inquest into his death was opened last week.

A spokesman for the council said: 'We were very sorry to learn of the death of Mr Wilkinson and we will be looking closely at the circumstances leading up to his death as part of our own internal investigation.'
