North Yorkshire police authority meets today to discuss widespread public criticism of huge secret payouts to women alleging sexual harassment, the Yorkshire Post reports (p1).

Police authority chair and North Yorkshire county councillor Angela Harris returns from the Liberal Democrat conference for the meeting, which is expected to be held behind closed doors.

Labour and Conservative group leaders on North Yorkshire CC yesterday demanded an independent inquiry. 'It is quite unacceptable for the police to continue to investigate themselves,' said Labour leader Roy Wilson.

Former chancellor Norman Lamont, prospective Tory candidate for Harrogate, has insisted there is a duty on the authority to explain how the settlement had been agreed:

'The Liberal Democrats have the largest political representation on the police authority, they should know what has gone on and should tell us all.'
