A Glasgow City councillor has vowed to oppose any application by convicted killer Archy McCafferty for council housing, reports The Scotsman (p5).

McCafferty, who has been deported from Australia where he lived for 37 years, is expected to return to Glasgow where he has relatives.

Cllr Paul Martin, who represents the ward of Sighthill where McCafferty's relations live, said he would fight any bid for his rehousing in the area.

However, a council spokesman said there was a statutory obligation to offer McCafferty accommodation if he asked for it, and it had a duty of confidentiality to him.
