Derby city council has welcomed the recommendation from the Local Government Commission that the city should have unitary status.

Leader Nick Brown said: 'This is marvellous news. We put a lot of work into making a clear case for independence for Derby.'

Mr Brown added that the council expected to take over the management of all the services in the city in April 1996. He went on to criticise the plans to keep a two tier structure in the rest of Derbyshire apart from the north west of the county.
