Firefighters in Derbyshire have called off a series of strikes after they were warned they would forfeit their pay for the whole of any shift during which a strike occurred, reported the Financial Times (21 Sept p6).
Since June the firefighters have staged 11 nine-hour strikes, spanning more than one shift, to protest at planned £1.3 million cuts from Derbyshire CC's fire and rescue service budget. The council has spent £500,000 providing emergency cover during the strike.
A twelfth strike, due on Saturday, was called off on Friday after a meeting between union officials and councillors. The two sides are to start fresh consultations in an effort to resolve the dispute. Compromises over details of the cuts have been put forward by the council.
