Derbyshire CC has found that some 'GM free' foods supplied to its canteens and school meals do contain genetically modified soya, BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this morning.

County councillor John Powell told the programme: 'We were surprised, as were the suppliers of the food. They were supplying stuff that they thought was GM free'.

The suppliers had changed their products but Derbyshire would continue to test regularly, he said. The county council has invested in the equipment to test for genetically modified foods. Mr Powell suggested other local authorities might find the same results if they carried out tests.
