A delegation from Derwentside DC, which has suffered a 5.7% cut in its standard spending assessment, travels to London today to plead with local government minister Sir Paul Beresford for a fairer financial settlement.

The Northern Echo reports (p5) that chief financial officer Keith Robinson described the spending target as a body blow to the authority:

'How can it cost us nearly 6% less to provide services next year when inflation alone increases costs by around 3.5% and when there is increasing pressure to provide a higher level of service?'
