Cornwall and Devon will get only a third of the money they asked for from the European Konver Fund, the Western Morning News reports (p5).

The paper says the two areas will get only around £600,000 from the Fund, which is designed to aid areas with defence related industries.

The DTI is expected to divert most of the South West allocation to Gloucestershire, Avon and Somerset.

Plymouth Labour MP David Jamieson condemned the allocation as 'pathetic'. But the paper reports DTI officials as saying that the Bristol area had put in a better bid.

Britain received a total of £15.4m from the Fund. With Devonport dockyard and other MoD bases, Devon and Cornwall had hoped for a larger share.
