Police have launched Britain's biggest child abuse inquiry into claims that a paedophile ring operated at a string of schools and children's homes in Devon.

The Daily Mail (p15) reports that police are collating complaints going back 20 years from up to 2,000 ex-pupils.

The inquiry is based around Forde Park approved school at Newton Abbot, which became a council-run home in 1971 and closed in the 1980s.

Two ex-teachers have been questioned and one has been charged. A children's home in nearby Chudleigh and three other schools are also being investigated.

Police believe the net will spread wider in the operation, which is expected to cost over£1m.
