Devon CC went £1m over budget on its road clearing operation due to the hard winter, the Western Morning News reports.

A report by county engineer Ed Chorlton says that there will also be a long term price to pay for the extra wear on the county's roads.

'The initial cost of clearance of storm debris and snow and treatment to prevent ice forming on roads does not represent the full costs that are a result of the severe winter,' he said.

The total bill for the road clearing operation was £3.7m, the paper reports.
