The Department for Transport has dropped strong hints that councils will gain wider powers over bus services.

The DfT work plan for 2006-2007 has included a commitment to 'devise ways of giving local authorities more control'.

Meanwhile, transport minister Derek Twigg wrote in a foreword to a Passenger Transport Executive Group booklet: 'We are looking at ways to improve planning and operating bus networks in big urban areas. This could involve local authorities and bus operators agreeing timetables, fares, bus priority and investment.'
