A Direction requiring Glasgow DC to refer plans to build a supermarket at Toryglen sports ground to the Scottish Sports Council was issued today by Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth.

The move follows the recent publication of draft guidelines to protect sports grounds throughout Scotland from development.

'I have acted today to allow the Scottish Sports Council to consider the future of this sports ground. It will then be up to Glasgow DC to consider their recommendations.

'The Scottish Sports Council are best placed to provide the necessary professional and independent advice on the local requirements for sport. It is therefore important that their view is sought so that the council can take the right decision based on the best advice.'

The Direction is issued under paragraph 15 (2) of the Town and Country Planning (General Development Procedure) (Scotland) Order 1992.
