Bury MBC has a new man in charge as a result of illness to chief executive David Burton.

The council's director of competitive services, Dennis Taylor, has been appointed as acting head of the authority.

With Mr Burton expected to be absent for some time, council leaders felt it necessary to fill the key position.

Mr Taylor has worked in local government for 30 years, previously at Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Gateshead.

He joined Bury in 1989 as managing director of Bury contract services which became the department of competitive services earlier this year.

He said: 'Whilst clearly the circumstances of my appointment are very sad, I am honoured and privileged to stand in as acting chief executive to ensure the smooth running of the local authority through what is a particularly difficult period.'
