The Department for Education and Skills has appointed Michael

Stevenson as the new director of strategy and communications.

He replaces Peter Wanless who has become the department's director of

secondary education.

Mr Stevenson was formerly joint director of factual and learning at

the BBC, where he developed and led the BBC's learning strategy,

ensuring that education was embedded into all the corporation's

activity.

This followed a series of senior BBC posts, including director of

education (1999-2000), deputy director of nations of regions

(1996-99) and secretary of the BBC (1992-96).

He will take up his post in June.
