Cherwell DC is spending £100,000 on a study of economic decline in rural areas of north Oxfordshire, reports BBC Oxford.

Cllr Keith Mitchell said the gradual disappearance of village shops, post offices and pubs was worrying the council, which now wants to assess the needs of these communities.

'We cannot subsidise businesses, but we have been looking at ways to help them to help themselves and to help residents help them', he explained.

The study is hoped to outline ways in which rural economies might be stimulated.
