Health secretary Frank Dobson could be the sole Labour candidate to go against Ken Livingstone in the race for London mayor, according to the Independent (p2).

Under secret plans drawn up by senior Labour party officials, Nick Raynsford, Glenda Jackson and Trevor Phillips would all stand aside to give Mr Dobson a clear run at beating Mr Livingstone.

The Health Secretary said yesterday: 'Tony Blair has not actually asked me to stand, but if he did I would have to consider it.'

However Nick Raynsford publicy denied he would pull out of the contest if Mr Dobson put himself forward as a candidate. Glenda Jackson and Trevor Phillips indicated they would reconsider their positions.
