The government has rejected Hampshire CC's plea for permission to borrow £5m to help it meet the costs of reorganisation, reports the Southern Daily Echo (p5).

Council leader Mike Hancock said the DoE had given permission for it to borrow £2.1m, leaving it to find £3m in a budget already expected to fall short by £21m.

Cllr Hancock said the government had gone some way to help but not far enough. 'We are still left to find £3m from our own scarce resources.'

His comments come two weeks after LGCNet (29 Oct) reported the total cost of reorganisation in the county had leapt to £40m, four times its original cost.
