A report on a research project published today shows that City Grant and its two predecessor grants have been successful in boosting confidence in inner cities by attracting substantial private sector investment, creating jobs, housing and environmental gains, said the Department of the Environment.

Announcing publication of the report Housing and Inner Cities Minister, Sir George Young said the publication was timely because English Partnerships will take responsibility for City Grant, merging it with its new unified grant regime.

The report says that the existing City Grant system is simple, well understood in the market and good value for money., says the DoE. It shows that without grant, none of the sample of projects studied for this research could have gone ahead. They would have been prevented by the abnormal construction costs of reclaiming and developing inner city sites.

'Evaluation of Urban Development Grant, Urban Regeneration Grant and City Grant' ISBN 011 752879X. Price £14.50.
