Whitehall has blasted Bedfordshire CC for a computer error costing the authority thousands of pounds and ending in job losses, reported Bedfordshire on Sunday.

Environment minister Robert Jones has warned the council 'to pull its socks up' after its commercial services department computer programme was found to be flawed, causing many errors. In a letter to North Bedfordshire MP Trevor Skeet he said the effect of the mistake was 'to hide operational deficits' within the CSD.

Once difficulties were discovered consultants were hired to iron out problems within the department at a cost of more tan £24,000. Subsequently some staff were made redundant as the department sought to cut back on costs.

Government has warned the CSD if it fails to meet targets this year it risks losing highways and maintenance contracts.
