Five councils' social services departments have improved enough to be taken off special measures by the Department of Health.
The five are Buckinghamshire CC, Bury MBC, Kingston-upon-Hull City Council, Newcastle City Council and Sefton MBC. They follow Ealing LBC, the first council to be removed from special measures (LGC, 24 March).
Eleven remain on the list: Barking & Dagenham LBC, Barnsley MBC, Cambridgeshire CC, Coventry City Council, Hackney LBC, Hillingdon LBC, Lambeth LBC, North East Lincolnshire Council, Peterborough City Council, Sheffield City Council, and Wirral MBC.
The DoH has approved all 150 'quality protects' action plans to improve children's social services. Plans by Blackpool BC, Manchester City Council, Portsmouth City Council, Stockton-on-Tees BC, Suffolk CC, Tameside MBC, Wandsworth LBC and Westminster City Council were said to be of particularly high quality.
