Statement by Eric Pickles, vice-chairman of the Conservative party, commenting on news that the police are to launch a major investigation into wrong-doings on Labour-controlled Doncaster MBC.

He said:

'The scale of the police investigation in Doncaster is a clear indication of the seriousness of the allegations. The launch of the Doncaster investigation marks a black day for local government. This is clearly the biggest and most extensive investigation into wrong-doing in local government for a generation.

'Throughout this campaign, Tony Blair and the Labour Party have been quick to point the finger of suspicion on the basis of the flimsiest supposition.

'Mr Blair now faces a massive problem in one of Labour's heartlands. He must give urgent consideration as to how he is going to act.

'It is a tragedy for the people of Doncaster that their town's name should be dragged through the mud as a result of the wrong-doings of the Labour council. But it is in their, and everyone's, interest that this investigation is pursued vigorously.'
