As the new year begins, the lengthy process of drawing together the party political manifestos will reach culmination.
As the parties anticipate the 2010 general election, Danny Alexander for the Liberal Democrats, Oliver Letwin for the Conservatives and Ed Miliband for Labour will consolidate the work they began back in the summer of 2007 and commit their policy ideas to the printing press.
The challenge for local government is to ensure the needs of councils and their residents are reflected in the finished manifestos.
Local government will be expected to achieve many of the aspirations expressed by the parties; if they are to have a chance of doing this successfully the next government will need to provide the appropriate support, funding and freedom for councils to act.
Now is the time to make sure that the views and needs of local government are heard - and included. Over the past two months LGC has collected manifesto pledge ideas from readers and now we are asking you to vote for the top five.
These will be compiled into LGC’s Localist Manifesto and presented to the parties.
