Two hundred Dorchester villagers have clubbed together to buy a 1,000 year old water meadow to prevent commercial development of the area, reports the Daily Telegraph (p36).

The meadow which borders the Thames at Dorchester was put on the market along with angling rights after the collapse of a company selling fishing licences there.

The villagers say that they will maintain free access to the meadow and ensure that it remains unchanged.
