Dorset social services is teetering at crisis point as its new budget leaves it with an £18m shortfall.

The director of social services Robin Sequeira warned he would have to drastically cut some vital services.

Child abuse investigations will have to be postponed even though cases have risen by 30%.

Other services at risk include checks on the mentally ill released into the community, home help in non-critical cases, counselling and day care for the mentally ill.

Mr Sequeira said: 'It is a very, very serious situation. As a result of this shortfall 25% of people who need our help will get nothing'.

He blamed the crisis on insufficient government grant to Dorset at a time when demands on social services had risen sharply.
