A consortium of three direct labour organisations comprising Dorset Works Organisation (the county council's DLO), Weyport Services and Christchuch Works has beaten off the competition from private contractors to win a£22m highway term maintenance contract.

Contract Journal (p8) reports that the consortium will begin the three-year contract, which covers highway and bridge maintenance and emergency repairs within Dorset, in April.

Andrew Martin, head of Dorset Works Organisation, said: 'I am sure that the success of our consortium in securing this contract will not only provide the best value to the local authorities in Dorset but will encourage other DLOs throughout the country to examine the possibility of a similar exercise for their operations.'

No jobs will be lost forming the consortium and it will have a total complement of around 250 staff and operatives.
